Phone Hostage Scam Hits Blue Point
Homeowners told to wire cash to get relatives' safe return.

A slew of fake ransom phone threats is prompting police to warn residents against such scams to avoid being conned out of cash.

The calls were made to homes on Blue Point Avenue, Willyn Road and two on Rogers Sreet.

One caller demanded a $1,000 in cash for the release of a woman’s husband, another called claimed to have both a family’s son and husband as hostages and the other two calls claimed to have a male relative in custody. In two of the reports the caller was identified as an Hispanic male, according to the reports.
Suffolk Police told Patch that such calls aren’t new and law enforcement has consistently issued advisories and more than a few reminders about such scans in which a caller demands money be wired in order to release the hostages.
