Sayville District Reaps Additional State Aid

New state budget provides a nearly six percent aid increase over current budget.

New York State's newly approved budget will result in significantly more aid for local schools.

Sayville School District will receive $440,648 more in extra funds for the 2012-2013 school year than projected in January.

Sayville’s original estimate of $22,669,805 in January was increased to $23,110,453.

The additional aid includes a gap restoration adjustment of $335, 511.

The approved aid numbers, released on March 30th, show the district will receive $1.27 million in aid next year, a 5.83 percent increase over the current school year. The state's January aid proposal reflected a 3.81 percent increase.

As of mid March the Sayville School Board of Education had set the year's budget at $85.7 million. This represents a 4.76 percent over the current budget. The board is scheduled to vote on a proposed budget on April 19.

Governor Cuomo's original January budget included plans to allocate money to districts through competitive grants that will now go instead to increased need-based aid. Changes to the final budget added $200 million, with a total annual increase in aid of $800 million allocated to schools across New York State.
