Sayville High School Students Compete in Long Island Science Fair

One Student Wins Fourth Place in Highly Competitive Division

Four students from Sayville High School’s R.I.S.E. science research program participated in the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, a regional qualifying event for the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF), held at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

Senior Ella Trama entered the highly competitive senior division in the Earth and Environmental Sciences category and placed fourth overall among more than 120 projects. Her research focused on engineering a novel nitrate filtration system for shellfish cultivation systems. Ella’s upwelling filtration system successfully removed high levels of nitrates from bay water, helping reduce harmful algal blooms that negatively affect water quality in the Great South Bay.

Sophomores Alexa Yacono and Gabriella Michailidis presented their ongoing research in the non-competitive junior division, exploring the effects of acetaldehyde on the gut microbiome of planaria. Their work aims to connect these findings to altered regeneration and cellular growth in humans exposed to acetaldehyde through alcohol consumption and inhalant vaping.

Junior Khylee Boesch showcased her research on alternative planting methods for Zostera marina in the junior division. Khylee developed biodegradable seed pods designed to withstand waves, tides, currents, and predators, providing seagrass seeds a better chance to germinate and help replenish disappearing seagrass beds along the South Shore estuary.

“These students exemplify the curiosity, dedication, and innovative thinking that define Sayville High School,” said Stephanie Bricker, Sayville High School principal. “Their research addresses important scientific and environmental challenges, and their success at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair is a testament to the talent and hard work of our R.I.S.E. students.”
