Senior Scholars Excel at Bayport-Blue Point HS

Two Bayport-Blue Point High School seniors were recently recognized for their remarkable academic achievements.

Patrick Liu was named a Commended Student by the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program, one of approximately just 34,000 such designees nationwide. His outstanding results on the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test placed him in the top five percent of the more than 1.5 million high school students who competed.

Sarah Barsch was selected as a 2014-2015 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar. The NHRP award, initiated in 1983 by the College Board, recognizes academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students based on scores on the PSAT/NMSQT they took as juniors. Those achieving a GPA of 3.5 or higher, such as Barsch, receive the Scholar designation.

Liu plays violin in the chamber orchestra and competes in Science Olympiad and DECA. Barsch, who plans to study public relations in college, participates in numerous activities including Habitat for Humanity, the school yearbook, the Tri-M Music Honor Society and her class club. Both students are also members of Bayport-Blue Point’s National Honor Society.

“I was ecstatic,” Barsch said of learning she had been recognized. “It’s such an honor.”
