I have heard from many people who said they had a large give of bees or yellow jackets in the walls or attic of their homes this year too. The stinging insects like bees and wasps have been worse this summer 2014 then the summer of 2013. This is due to the fact that North East and in Long Island NY ,we experienced a much cooler summer.

What do entomologist say about cool east coast summer with bees in 2014.We asked and they gave us a interesting answer. The reason the bees and wasps have been so active is due to the cool summer we have experienced.
Bees have many methods of keeping the hive cool when it’s hot. There are house bees who mind the temperature in the hive. The house bees fan their wings in a way that takes the humidity out of the hive. This process cools the hive, and it evaporates moisture in the nectar as it changes to honey.Worker Bees keep the hive temperature uniform in the critical brood area which is were the new bees are raised. Workers must maintain the hive’s brood chamber at 34.4 °C to incubate the eggs. If it is too hot, they collect water and deposit it across the hive, they then fan air through with their wings causing cooling by evaporation The issue this summer of 2014 has been the cool temperatures. These worker bees have not had to cool the hive due to the cool temperatures. So what do these worker bees do? They fly out of the hive to create new hives.

We have gotten more calls this summer for bees, wasps, and hornets. These calls continue at a high rate as we approach Fall. Hives are being found everywhere. We have removed in ground hives and huge above ground hives. So as we enjoy the last days of summer be sure to be on the look out for stinging insects.
