On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Sayville Fitness sponsors Tai Chi classes at the Common Ground Park. Classes start at 6 p.m. and run for an hour. This is the second summer that they are providing these tranquil lessons to the residents of Sayville. Also back for his second summer is the instructor, Stephen Lee.
All the classes are free with no strings attached and no registration – just show up and enjoy. Anywhere from 10 to 30 people come to the park to do Tai Chi. Last year it was such a dedicated group, they continued the classes into the late fall, when the snow finally put an end to it.
Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art. Translated it means - supreme ultimate fists. It's based on the union of opposites, like pull and push. The familiar black and white yin-yang design that's associated with other martial arts is actually the symbols for Tai Chi.

With its slow moving gestures, Tai Chi is very easy to do and can be practiced by anyone with any health ailments or handicaps, including people in wheelchairs. It can improve your health, breathing, muscles and bones. The relaxing form reduces stress and encourages meditations.
Lee has been practicing Tai Chi for over 30 years and teaching it for 20 years. But even with all his experience and knowledge, he welcomes all levels of Tai Chi students. If anyone is new to the class, Lee pulls them aside to give a mini lesson and the background of Tai Chi to help them relax. To get the full Tai Chi experience in the park setting he plays spa music.
