Tennis Fundraiser Is An Ace

Fans bring in more than $2,000 to benefit Hope House Ministries.

Hope House Ministries volunteer Michael Hoffner brought his love of tennis and serving people in need to the court to raise more than $2,000 to benefit the Port Jefferson-based charity.

Founded by Father Frank Pizzarelli in 1980, Hope House runs eight projects serving a variety of people in need, including abused women, the poor, and drug addicts. Hoffner was a patient in one of the programs. Now in his late twenties, Hoffner works as a volunteer at the Montfort Therapuetic Residence, which helps troubled youth.

"Michael is a success story," Father Frank said.  "He was on the brink of destruction but changed and transformed his life."

Blue Point's donated all six of their tennis courts for the evening fundraiser from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.- the gym is normally opened for business only until 6 p.m. Hoffner secured donations for food and numerous raffled prizes, including a $200 gift certificate to the Huntington Learning Center.

Tickets were $40 per person and entitled participants to tennis court time, food and drinks. Approximately 30 people came to support the effort, many of whom were recruited from Hoffner's tennis team.

One such team member was Angela Jansen of Bellport. Jansen said she has been discouraged by a lack of opportunities in volunteering with other organizations, but thinks Hope House Ministries is diffeent.

"This is a great cause. I wanted to see if I could volunteer as well," Jansen said.

Thanks to volunteers and private donations, Father Frank is able to run his entire operation at no cost to participants.
