Traffic Monitoring Device on Bayport Stop Sign Vanishes

The mystery around a traffic monitoring device on a Bayport stop sign continues as the device is now gone.

On Wednesday Patch reported the device on the north side sign pole, for traffic heading west, at the four-way intersection of Middle Road, Seaman Avenue and McConnell Avenue.

Calls to Suffolk County officials revealed that the county department of works had installed the long antenna recording device but Patch is still awaiting calls on the reasons for the device, when it was installed and who requested the installation.

According to Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay's office the devices are routinely used to determine if roadway improvements or signage have impacted volume on a roadway. A Lindsay legislative aide said he did not know the particular reason for the Middle Road camera and referred Patch to the DPW.

Three calls to DPW chief Bob Hillman were not returned as of close of business Thursday, the day the device disappeared from the stop sign at some point.
