Vigil To Honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg Held In Sayville [PHOTOS]

Hundreds gathered for a candlelight vigil held to honor Ginsburg, who died on Sept. 18.

SAYVILLE, NY — Hundreds gathered for a candlelight vigil held in Sayville last week to honor the death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Ginsburg died of complications of metastatic pancreas cancer Friday, Sept. 18 at her home in Washington, D.C. She was 87.

Sayville High School senior and Suffolk for Biden co-chair Vincent Vertuccio organized the event at the Common Ground on Gillette and Candee Avenue last Thursday.

Vertuccio said over 200 people attended the event including elected officials and candidates such as State Senator Monica Martinez and former Assemblywoman and New York Senate Candidate Christine Pellegrino, who spoke to the crowd on what Ginsburg's legacy meant to them.

In addition, Sayvill High School students including Emily Rosado, Ben Flaumenhaft, and Grace Urmaza spoke on the general legacy of "RBG" and another student, Maggie Mongiello, spoke on specific pieces of her legacy such as reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ rights. Kaddish was read by Hannah Williams.

The vigil then closed with a 87 second moment of silence for Ginsburg's 87 years of life, followed by a laying of small stones by attendees at a photo of Ginsburg, in accordance with Jewish tradition.
