Scarsdale Inquirer suspending publication -has served area since 1901

Sad news for democracy

Just learned that the Scarsdale Inquirer is suspending publication. The Inquirer covered Edgemont, Hartsdale, Greenburgh government, community affairs, sports on a weekly basis since the publication was founded in 1901 as a weekly. The suspension of publication of the Inquirer, just months after WVOX radio shut down, is sad news for democracy. The Inquirer was the last media outlet that frequently assigned reporters to cover Town Board meetings. They independently analyzed policies and initiatives local governments and school districts were taking. They made thousands of parents smile with pride when their children were featured as top scholars, athletes, musicians or artists. Independent newspapers and media contribute to an informed electorate which is essential for a democracy to function.
It's my hope that suspension is only suspension - not the end of this weekly publication. I also hope for more independent reporting of all government decisions.
