2nd Mastic Area Shooting In Week As 15yo Shot On Reservation: PD

She survived with "minor injuries" and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, Suffolk police said.

MASTIC, NY — Detectives are investigating the shooting of a 15-year-old girl at the Poospatuck Indian Reservation in Mastic on Sunday night — one of two on the Mastic-Shirley Peninsula over one week, police said.

The 15-year-old was "outside" on Abby Lane when she was shot in the foot by an unknown assailant just after 9 p.m., Suffolk police said. The suspect ran away and the teen was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with “minor injuries,” according to police.

No arrests have been made in the case, but the investigation is continuing, police said.

Sunday's shooting is the second on the Mastic-Shirley Peninsula since eighteen-year-old Marcel Arrington was found shot dead nearby in Mastic Beach last Tuesday.

A 911 caller had reported a man was shot on Bayview Drive just after 9 p.m. and officers responding to the scene found Arrington lying in front of his home with a gunshot wound, police said.

Arrington was pronounced dead at Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue, according to police.

Arrington, a recent graduate of William Floyd High School, was remembered at a community vigil on Thursday.

The next day — two days after his fatal shooting — police responded to the high school as a “precaution” to investigate social media posts concerning a potential threat.

It is not clear if there is a connection between the alleged high school threat and the teen who was shot on Sunday. Police said that it does not appear that there is a relation between Sunday’s shooting and that of the fatal shooting that killed Arrington.

Suffolk’s Public Information Bureau declined to release any “additional information about the victim, including what school she attends or if she is a member” of the Unkechaug tribe.

Personal residence information involving minors is not normally released by police to the media for privacy reasons.

Members of the Poospatuck Reservation attend school in the Center Moriches School District.

“The threat at [William Floyd High School] is under investigation and no additional information is being released at this time,” a spokeswoman wrote in an email.

It is not clear if either shooting is related.

In a statement, William Floyd School District officials said that they were made aware "of social media screenshots discussing a potential issue at the high school," but they had not received "any threats toward the school or any building in the district."

District officials received social media screenshots "of people discussing a threat that someone else heard about, and they are taking any discussion of the "nature extremely seriously as the safety and security of students and staff is the number one priority," the statement read.

Police were on-site throughout the day, officials said, adding that school security used metal-detecting wands to "check for weapons" as students entered the building.

Physical education classes and recess at schools within the vicinity of the high school were brought inside for the day as "another precautionary measure," officials said.

Safety and security of the students and staff are the "top priority," officials said, adding, "If anything changes, the district will notify the community as quickly as possible."

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

News 12 received a screenshot of saying "dead man pack" and another stating "Marcel" along with audio of someone taking credit for Arrington's killing, the outlet reported.

Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer told News 12 that the police have the audio recording but are taking it with a "grain of salt."

"It could be just someone bragging," he told the outlet.

In the third incident, an 18-year-old man was shot in Mount Sinai on Saturday, police said. A 911 caller reported a person shot was shot at a Brian Lane home at about 6:3o p.m., said police, adding that when officers arrived at the scene, they found the man “with a gunshot wound to his leg.”

He was transported to an area hospital “with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries,” police said.

Detectives believe the 18-year-old wound was a result of the “accidental discharge of a rifle,” police said. The investigation is continuing, according to police.
