Poor Air Quality After Car Fire Keeps Kids Indoors Thursday

MASTIC BEACH, NY — A car fire in Mastic Beach has kept students indoors on Thursday.

According to Suffolk County Police, a call came in at 11:52 a.m. for a car fire at 240 Mastic Beach Road; the fire was out by 12:11 p.m. and no injuries were reported.

A notice from the William Floyd School District said that the car fire at the intersection of Mastic Beach Road and Francis Landau Place led to poor air quality.

According to the Mastic Fire Department Chemical Company #1, Chief Rudy Sunderman arrived at the scene, just outside of William Floyd High School property to find a Safelite Auto Glass van fully engulfed in flames; engine 5-12-1 arrived and "quickly extinguished the fire," the fire department said.

Due to the air quality, students in the surrounding buildings, including William Floyd High School, Floyd Academy, William Paca Middle School, Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School, John S. Hobart Elementary School, Tangier Smith Elementary School, William Floyd Elementary School and the William Floyd Learning Center will remain inside for the remainder of the school day, school officials said.
