4 Long Island Parks To Stay Open Later For Meteor Shower

Residents will be able to visit one of four state parks which will offer extended hours for the Perseids meteor shower next week.

LONG ISLAND, NY - Stargazers will have the chance to view the upcoming meteor shower at one of four Long Island parks that will offer extended hours next week.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced on Thursday that several local State Parks will remain open for the viewing of the Perseids Meteor Shower on the evening of Monday, August 12.

The parks that will stay open later include:

  • Jones Beach State Park - West End II
  • Gov. Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow State Park - Field 3
  • Montauk Point State Park - Upper Parking Lot
  • Wildwood State Park – main Parking Lot

Peak viewing times are predawn, August 13, 2019.

There will be no charge and the normal star gazing permit will not be required. However visitors must stay near their cars.

Park officials suggest that visitors dress appropriately, bring bug spray, and a chair that reclines. Binoculars are not necessary. Guests can looks towards the northeast to enjoy the celestial show.
