The SUV went up in flames and the driver was rescued by a local resident Friday night, police say.
SMITHTOWN, NY - A 42-year-old man faces a felony DWI charge after he crashed his SUV at a Smithtown park Friday night, police said.
According to police, John Shea was driving a 2009 Ford Escape at Laurel Park in Smithtown when he drove off the travel portion of the parkland around 7:35 p.m. The SUV caught fire after landing in underbrush and scrub, police said.
A man who lives near the park pulled Shea from the burning vehicle, police said.
Shea, who was not injured, was arrested and charged with felony DWI, a felony because he has a previous DWI conviction, police said.
Commack firefighters put out the blaze.
