An off-duty Suffolk County Police officer, along with several good Samaritans, rescued a man who was suffering from cardiac arrest early Monday in St. James.

According to police, Highway Patrol Safe-T Section officer Steven Turner was off-duty and playing hockey at the Sports Arena, located at 620 Middle Country Road, when a 49-year-old man, who was also playing hockey, collapsed from cardiac arrest.

Turner and the good Samaritans started CPR and located the automated external defibrillator (AED) that was at the facility, police said. After they administered two shocks, the victim began breathing on his own and regained a pulse.
