NESCONSET, NY - A Nesconset family was able to escape a fire at their home Sunday afternoon, but their five cats were reportedly killed in the blaze.
The fire at 60 Summit Drive started in the basement and then quickly spread to the first floor and roof, Newsday reported.
Five fire departments under the command of Nesconset Chief Jim Keane helped put out the blaze.
“The wind played a big part in the fire,” Keane told Newsday. “Fire came out of the back basement window, the wind caught it, and it created a blowtorch effect.”
An online fundraiser for the family has raised more than $5,000 of a $25,000 goal. Find more details on the fire and how you can donate here.
