Police Seeking Pair in Distraction Theft From Elderly Man in Smithtown

The incident occurred in October. Reward offered for info leading to an arrest.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Hate Crime Unit detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate two people who distracted an elderly man and stole money from him in Smithtown in October.

According to police, a man followed an elderly man into Chase Bank, located at 705 Route 347, and observed him withdraw money from his account on Oct. 31. The suspect and another man then followed the victim to New York Community Bank, located at 719 Route 347, at approximately 11:40 a.m.

When the victim wasn’t looking, one of the men distracted the victim while the other man entered the victim’s vehicle and stole money, police said.
