SMITHTOWN, NY — Students in Mrs. Hoffman's earth science honors class at Smithtown High School West are finishing up their unit on weather, learning about air pressure and wind, the Smithtown Central School District announced via news release.

Using only paper cups, straws, a pencil and a thumbtack, the students were tasked with modeling and engineered the construction of anemometers. This lesson helps students prepare for the Next Generation Science Standards performance expectations by planning and carrying out investigations. They tested their anemometers using the classroom’s fan at different speeds.
