Here are the top three stories in and around Smithtown today:

  1. Smithtown Parking Violation Amnesty goes into effect today. Beginning today and lasting through the end of the month, all parking violations issued between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2021, can be paid off with a 50 percent reduction on the amount of the outstanding fine. To make a payment, visit this website or pay by check or money order to 65 Maple Avenue, Smithtown. (Town of Smithtown)
  2. Stony Brook Center of Excellence for Alzheimer's Disease (CEAD) has received $2.35 million in the form of a state-funded grant to help battle Alzheimer's. Stony Brook Medicine is the only recipient of this competitive grant on Long Island out of 10 NYSDOH-supported, hospital-based centers in the state. The center will continue to serve both Nassau and Suffolk counties. (Stony Brook News)
  3. Smithtown residents should steer clear of these two South Shore beaches that have been closed to bathing due to findings of bacteria at excess levels, according to Suffolk County Department of Health Services. West Islip Beach in West Islip and Benjamin Beach in Bay Shore is said to contain bacteria in the water that goes beyond "acceptable criteria." According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gregson Pigott, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness and infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
