This course is designed to reinforce and enhance students’ knowledge of scientific principles and processes as it applies to the study of food and nutrition and is used as a science credit.
Food science connects aspects of food chemistry, biology, earth science and psychology to real-life examples through class discussions, experiments, projects and cooking labs. Smithtown High School West students recently learned about macronutrients during a hands-on lab. They studied complex carbohydrates and made bagels and butter by altering the physical state of a liquid.
