2 Charged After Brawl At High School Basketball Game: Cops

The brawl at a basketball game held at Southampton High School took place in February, police say.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Two young men were charged after a brawl at Southampton High School that erupted during a basketball game in February, police said.

According to Southampton Village Police, on May 1 at 4:15 p.m., Shykim Rich, 18, of Wyandanch was arrested and charged with third degree assault, a misdemeanor. Rich was charged in connection with allegedly assaulting a fan at a basketball game at Southampton High School on February 6, police said.

Also on May 3, at 9:45 a.m., Jeremiah J. Hayes Jr., 20, of Wyandanch was arrested and charged with third degree assault, a misdemeanor, police said.

He was also alleged to have assaulted a fan at the basketball game at Southampton High School on the same day, police said.

Both were processed and released on an appearance ticket, police said.

The brawl at the basketball game resulted in multiple injuries, police said at the time.

According to Southampton Village Police, multiple 911 calls came in at 7:58 p.m. regarding a large group of people fighting in the gym at the Southampton High School.

Members of the Wyandanch Memorial High School basketball team and their spectators became involved in multiple fights with spectators from Southampton, police said.

Southampton School security, staff and coaching personnel were able to restore order as police arrived on scene, police said. The incident lasted approximately 15 to 20 minutes, police said.
