They have been used throughout the world for as long as there has been recorded history. They keep a beat, make a rhythm for singing and dancing, they keep us company. We use them to journey; we use them in our Medicine work to heal ourselves and others. Drums offer an important way to move along the path of personal power.
The Hoops we use are Cedar, usually 15”. The Skins for the heads are either Elk, Horse, Goat, or Buffalo. None are better than the other, just different. I only buy the skins from those whom I feel are ethical, - that is the feeling I get when speaking to them - they say the great give-away
of the animal is done in a respectful manner, that no life is ended specifically to make drums, most die from old age or illness. The energy of the great cedar tree, who shows us how to stand tall and be forever green and alive, and the energy of the animal – the elk for relationships or the horse to take you on a fast ride for a journey - come together with your own energy, your heart, yourself. There is a great feeling that goes with making your own drum, because you put yourself in it, and every time you hear the sound of the beat, you will know that you are a part of it.
