Free Well Testing Offered for Sandy Affected Properties

Water Authority will test private wells.

For owners of properties with private wells who are concerned about their water quality after Superstorm Sandy blew through, the Suffolk County Water Authority is offering free well testing, according to county Legislator Jay Schneiderman, I-Montauk.

A statement from Schneiderman's office explains that the tests will make sure that wells have not been contaminated by bacteria, fuels or chlorides via saltwater intrusion during the storm.

The program runs through Dec. 20 for Suffolk homeowners in communities that suffered extensive storm damage, to allow the homeowners sufficient time to take care of other priorities, SCWA Chairman James F. Gaughran said. The deadline will be extended indefinitely for property owners who have not returned to their homes by Dec. 20.
