Friends Rally To Help Woman Who's Spent Years Giving To Others

"Allowing friends and even strangers to hold you up when you are struggling is what makes us whole. We cannot walk this life alone."

SAG HARBOR, NY — Sometimes, asking for help is not something that comes easily.

So says Minerva Perez, who turned to GoFundMe to help a friend in need who was hesitant to ask for assistance. Perez created the page, "Helping Nelly and Family", to bring the community together in support.

"Nelly is a good friend of mine. She has been in terrible pain and finally was able to have spinal surgery. She cares for her elderly and ill father," Perez said. "She has 2 beautiful children and a husband who is loving. They are overwhelmed with bills that are piling up during this winter."

Nelly has been helping people for more than 10 years, Perez explained. "But just like so many strong women I know, she did not want to ask for help. When I promised her that our community would stand behind her with open hearts, she finally said 'yes.'"

Nelly, she said, has been an advocate for victims of domestic violence, serves on the board of Organización Latino-Americana, and drives individuals to appointments, when needed.

Perez added heartfelt words of wisdom: "Allowing friends and even strangers to hold you up when you are struggling is what makes us whole. We cannot walk this life alone. Please help Nelly and her family."
