Hamptons Native Launches Local Candle Company

Southampton resident Brittany Torres recently started her company, Hamptons Handpoured.

After a year of planning, Hamptons native Brittany Torres, finally launched her local candle company, Hamptons Handpoured in March in order to share with customers her love and passion for aromatherapy, small business, and of course, the Hamptons.

“I have always been in love with candles because they create an experience,” Torres said.” Whether candles are lit in the bathroom while taking a relaxing bath, in the kitchen while entertaining guests, or outside creating light on a dark evening, candles always add ambiance to any setting.”

Torres was inspired to create the locally made collection from her daily life as a year-round resident of the East End.

“There are so many unique aromas that are distinctive to the Hamptons that remind me of so many good times had out here,” she said “All play a part in the selection of essential and fragrance oils used in my candles.”

She found a love of essential oils after suffering from health issues and finding the fragrance in essentials oils to be relaxing and comforting.

This inspired her to learn Aromachology, or the study of the influence of odors on human behavior, and how to create candles.

“I went to a few classes about essential oil, watched several tutorials about candle making online and began experimenting,” Torres said. “I began giving my candles away as hand crafted holiday gifts and had very positive feedback. The actual Aha moment was when I realized that I would light candles for every occasion whether it be a bubble bath, in my kitchen while cleaning up after dinner, and in my bathrooms and entry way when I entertained.

Aromachology and candles quickly became a big part of her life and led Torres to want to share the experience with others.

In the quiet days of the winter, she began to hand pour all the candles in her studio behind a retail store, Therapy Life and Style in Southampton, where Torres is manager.

She also occasionally brings her work home with her, making her candles in small kettles right in her kitchen.

Torres has received help and support from her boyfriend, Jason Lucas, who is also highly involved in the making of the candles and her parents, Bob and Alanna Torres, who help prep the glassware and space for candle making.

While Hamptons Handpoured does not have its own storefront, customers can purchase candles either at Therapy Life and Style located at 38 Main Street in Southampton or through the online store.

In addition, candles will be sold wholesale to boutiques, home decor shops, florists, and select spas/salons throughout the Hamptons.

The business will add retail partners to their Store Locator page on their website www.HamptonsHandpoured.com upon the official launch in May.

“What makes my candles unique from any other that you can buy in this area, is that they are actually MADE right in the Hamptons,” Torres said. “From the creative process and design, the mixing of the soy wax and fragrance, to marketing and selling are all done by me and my incredible support system all natives to the East End. I see so many products manufactured in Vermont, Maine, and the rest of the US but, we are local and the candle you purchase was carefully hand crafted by myself or Jason.”

Torres created each candle poured by hand using 100% high quality, clean burning soy and essential oil blends.

According to Torres, each scent used in the Hamptons Handpoured Signature Village Collection, tells the story of life on the East End.

The collection includes a scent for each specific part of the Hamptons including:

  • The Westhampton, made with Orange, Balsam, and Lavender
  • The Southampton, made with Cotton, Gardenia, and White Tea
  • The Bridgehampton, made with Lime, Arugula, and Honeysuckle
  • The Sag Harbor, made with Cedarwood, Vanilla, and Honey
  • The East Hampton, made with Cashmere, Fig, and Strawberry
  • The Montauk, made with Sandalwood, Bergamot, and Spice

As a Southampton native, the Southampton Candle is Torres favorite, but the customer favorite is the Bridgehampton, which, was created to embody the scent of honeysuckle along the hedges near the ocean and the backyard fields of the homes in the area, according to Torres.
