ICYMI: Driver of Car Hit by Train Issued Summons For Violating Traffic Law

The driver of the car that was hit by a train in Southampton on Sunday afternoon was issued a summons for violating a state traffic law, according to MTA spokeswoman Meredith Daniels.

A 71-year-old male driver from Flanders was driving his car with no passengers when he stopped on the tracks, according to Daniels.

The gates then cycled down (working as intended) and the driver was unable to get his car off the tracks as the train approached, according to Daniels.

The driver exited the car before the train hit the car. He suffered a minor leg injury while exiting the car and no passengers on the train were injured, Daniels said.

He was issued a summons for ”operating a vehicle around under or through lowered railroad gates,” according to Daniels.

One person was hospitalized after a train struck a car in Southampton on Sunday afternoon, according to MTA spokeswoman Meredith Daniels.

At 2:15 p.m., a train hit a car that was on the tracks on Tuckahoe Road, Daniels said.

The gates were operating and it is unknown why the car was on the tracks, she said.

The unidentified person was transported to Southampton Hospital for a leg injury, Daniels said.
