IRS Phone Scams On Rise: How To Stay Safe
Southampton Police have put out some tips to help protect against scammers during tax season.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — IRS phone scams escalate during tax season — and Southampton Town Police have put out tips to help keep residents safe.
Tips for the community include:
- The IRS will not contact you via telephone.
- The IRS will contact you by mail for any issues that arise.
- Do not give out your personal information over the phone.
- Do not give out your Social Security number over the phone.
- If you suspect you are speaking with someone involved with a scam, hang up and contact the IRS to confirm that there is an issue with your taxes.
- Do not send money via Western Union.
- Do not provide credit card numbers.
