Man Found With Handgun Becomes 'Combative,' Assaults Officer: PD

He was found intoxicated and asleep in his vehicle with a handgun in the Hamptons early Thanksgiving morning, police say.

SAGAPONACK, NY — An intoxicated Sagaponack man was arrested after a handgun was found in his vehicle and he became combative and assaulted a police officer early Thursday, authorities said.

Errol Gene Scott, 23, was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony; second-degree assault, a felony; and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, the incident took place at 4:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning when a call came in about an unconscious man in a vehicle in Sagaponack. Officers responded and found Scott in the vehicle, police said.

Officers woke Scott, who was intoxicated, and were attempting to assist him to move the vehicle, which was impeding traffic, when they located a handgun while trying to find the keys, police said.

Officers determined that the handgun was possessed illegally and when they tried to arrest Scott, he became combative, police said.

Scott was taken to the hospital to be medically cleared and was released into police custody; he was transported to police headquarters and held for morning arraignment, police said.
