More Than 60 Crashes Since Midnight, County Exec Reports
Suffolk County Police have a message for motorists during Thursday's storm: Stay off the roads.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — With snow pelting the area, blizzard conditions reported, and New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo declaring a state of emergency on Long Island, Suffolk County Police are urging residents to stay home and stay safe.
"As expected, Winter Storm Grayson has created treacherous driving situations with whiteout conditions with near zero visibility due to strong winds," SCPD said. "Traffic has been lighter than usual but the Suffolk County Police Department is still urging everyone to stay off the roads unless it is an absolute emergency situation. Since midnight, the department has responded to more than 30 motor vehicle crashes."
Later in the day, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said the total was rising, with 69 accidents reported since midnight, and more than 1,000 outages countywide.

Officials are reporting spinouts on major roadways because of poor visibility; motorists cannot see exit ramps or their way on major thoroughfares.
For those that must travel, SCPD said motorists should be prepared with a survival kit in case of an emergency, including a flashlight, food, water, snow shovel and a heavy blanket for warmth.
