Original story: Flanders Road was closed Sunday night after a multi-car accident, police said.

Police were still at the scene of the accident, which happened just after 7 on Sunday, and could not yet release information regarding how many people, if any, were injured, authorities said..

Flanders Road was closed from Route 105 to Ludlam Avenue, police said.

No further information was immediately available.

The accident is the third serious crash on Flanders Road in two weeks: Police identified a man killed in a four-vehicle accident on Flanders Road on Monday, Sept. 14 as James Sager, 57, of Babylon.

According to Southampton Police Sgt. Susan Ralph, "We are looking at a possible medical issue. We're not ruling anything out."

The cause of the accident will not be known until police receive a medical examiner's report, she said.

Ralph said Sager was heading west and veered into the eastbound lane, striking three other vehicles; the woman in the third vehicle was hit head-on and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, she said.

The woman was in stable condition Monday, Ralph said.

Sager was pronounced dead on the scene, she said.

According to Southampton Police Sgt. Susan Ralph, the call came in about the accident at 8:04 p.m.; the crash took place near Fireman's Memorial Park with Flanders Road closed down from Bellows Pond Road to Fanning Avenue to Pleasure Drive.

Police have not yet released the identity of either the person killed or the person airlifted by Suffolk County Aviation.
Southampton Police received assistance from New York State Police, Ralph said; "multiple injuries" were sustained in the crash, although it was not immediately clear how many others were taken to area hospitals, she said.

Hampton Bays Ambulance rescue responded, Ralph said.

Sunday's crash comes just two weeks after another incident on Flanders Road, when a hit-and-run driver fled the scene after striking a pedestrian, police said.

Southampton Town Police and New York State Troopers responded to that scene on Nov. 6 at 6:07 p.m. to 141 Flanders Road in Riverside, where a man was found on the south shoulder of the road, looking as though he'd been hit by a vehicle, police said.

Flanders Ambulance responded to treat the injured man, who was then flown to Stony Brook University Hospital via the Suffolk County Police aviation in serious condition, police said.

Further investigation revealed that an unknown sport utility vehicle had hit the man as he crossed the roadway in a crosswalk near 125 Flanders Road, police said.

The man was hit as he crossed from the north side to the south side of the street, police said.

The vehicle sustained front end passenger side damage of its light cluster and was last seen heading east along Flanders Road while fleeing the scene, police said.

The Southampton Town Police Department's detective division is actively investigating that incident, police said.
