Brewster Cub Scouts Learn About Civics With County Executive

The Webelos Scouts of Brewster Pack 1 got to ask the County Executive questions and then tour the historic Putnam County Courthouse.

BREWSTER, NY — The Webelos Scouts of Brewster Pack 1 recently received a lesson in civics and local history. As part of the Building a Better World badge, the 5th grade Cub Scouts are required to meet with a government official or community leader, learn about that person's role in the community, and discuss with the leader an important issue facing the community.

These particular Scouts were lucky enough to meet with the Putnam County Executive, MaryEllen Odell. The Scouts prepared questions ahead of time that including inquiries about how the county government works, what she liked about her job, and local issues. Topics included the impact on Putnam of the closing of Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, the challenges of addiction and how the Scouts could be better citizens.

After interviewing the County Executive, the 14 Scouts and their families toured the historic County Courthouse.

"I am so glad to have had a part in helping these scouts learn about citizenship," Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell said. "Our communities are stronger when citizens are engaged, and the Webelos Den from Brewster Pack 1 Cub Scouts asked plenty of hard questions about the functions of government. They give me hope for the future."
