Counterfeit, Weapon, Drug, Driving Arrest On I-84

It started with a traffic stop.

BREWSTER, NY — A traffic stop on I-84 Tuesday led to counterfeit, weapons, drugs and driving charges against a Bronx man.

New York State Police from the Brewster barracks observed a 2018 Kia Optima traveling on Interstate 84 at about 2 a.m., and conducted a vehicle and traffic stop for a vehicle and traffic law infraction. They found Anthony J. Smith had three or more suspensions on his license.

Troopers allege he was in possession of three oxycodone pills, $5,100 in counterfeit U.S. currency, and an illegal knife.

He was charged with Possession of a Forged Instrument in the 1st degree, a class C felony, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd degree, a class D felony, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th degree, a class A misdemeanor, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the 2nd degree, an unclassified misdemeanor.

Smith, 26, was arraigned before the town of Patterson Court, and sent to the Putnam County Jail in lieu of $7,500 cash bail or $15,000 bond. Smith is next scheduled to appear before the Court Thursday.
