Letter to the Editor: Fleming Thanks Conservative Supporters

The writer, challenging the Putnam County Executive in November, received 71 write-in votes in last week's Conservative Primary.

To the Editor:

Something very important happened in Putnam's Conservative Primary. Once thought to be the stronghold of the incumbent County Executive, 20% of the party’s voting membership spoke out against the excess and corruption of the Odell Administration. I ran a write-in campaign. Those folks had to make a conscious decision and an effort to choose me—they didn’t just fill in a box because party bosses told them to.

Conservatives know that the time to finally break up Club Putnam has arrived. We all know it. Now, voters of all parties must come together, stand with me and do just that.

I am grateful to the Conservatives who heard my message of fiscal restraint and clean, qualified government. Thank you for opening your doors to me and my volunteers over the last month. I hear you: you want taxes brought under control so you and your family can stay in Putnam; you want quality infrastructure; you want development that creates well-paying jobs without destroying Putnam’s character; you want fair deals for union labor. You want a County Executive who brings people to the table, not one who scares them away with intimidation and lies. I want the same things. Let’s work together to give taxpayers what they deserve.

My team consists of good people from all parties who have stepped up and given generously of their time, talents and energy. I am grateful to all the petition carriers, canvassers, callers and donors who believe in me. These folks aren’t working hard because they look forward to a patronage appointment or a payoff. They’re working hard because they love Putnam County and they want it to run cleanly, effectively and for the benefit of all taxpayers. I love Putnam County, too, and I want it to work for all of us, not just big donors and cronies.

We have a job to do on November 6th: taking back our County government from Club Putnam. I look forward to meeting voters of all parties, in every town, of every age, every belief and interest. Let’s talk about what you need and want from County government. Let’s set priorities and goals together, and let’s meet them.
