'Life-Changing' Ready, Set, Work! Program Graduates Its First Class

The regimen conceived to give those on probation the tools they need for reintegration into the workforce is being celebrated as a success.

PUTNAM COUNTY, NY — A new program to help give those recently released from jail the skills to thrive in the workforce has graduated its inagural class and the results have exceeded expectations.

Putnam County's recently launched new job preparedness initiative in the Probation Department, the "Ready, Set, Work! Program" was conceived to empower probationers with essential job readiness and retention skills. The very first class, facilitated by Senior Probation Officer Charleen Effinger, recently graduated from the program, marking a big step forward in helping those on probation with the tools they need to have success in the workplace.

The Ready, Set, Work! Program, comprises ten modules totaling twenty hours of training. The hands-on experience addresses different aspects of job preparedness. The modules cover topics such as job applications, interviews, understanding employer expectations, and overcoming employment barriers. The program is designed to improve the job prospects and long-term employability of those who have gone through the criminal justice system, recognizing the pivotal role employment plays in reducing recidivism, according to organizers.

"Empowering these individuals with job readiness skills is a crucial step towards their successful reintegration into society," County Executive Kevin Byrne said of the launch. "This program not only offers practical skills but also instills confidence and a sense of purpose in individuals who are striving to rebuild their lives. I commend Director Osterhout and everyone in the Putnam County Probation Department for their commitment to fostering positive change in our community."

Senior Probation Officer Charleen Effinger, a 15-year veteran of the Putnam County Probation Department, spearheaded the program. Her certification as a Workforce Development Specialist from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Office of Probation and Correctional Alternatives uniquely positioned her to make a change in the lives of probationers.

The first cohort of graduates also praised the program's impact, describing it as "life-changing."

Collaborations with local businesses and organizations, including Key Bank, a local attorney for mock job interviews, and the Putnam County Workforce Partnership, helped offer participants additional resources for success.

The Putnam County Probation Department said it already plans to build on the success of the Ready, Set, Work! program and offer it on an ongoing basis, with the aim of starting the next session in the coming months.

"The Ready, Set, Work! program exemplifies our dedication to giving people the tools they need to break the cycle of recidivism," Putnam County Probation Director John Osterhout said. "We are committed to continuing this program and expanding its reach, making a positive impact on the lives of more individuals seeking a second chance."
