Op-Ed: County Executive Condemns School Threats, Bigotry

He called for proper investigation unhampered by political grandstanding.

County Executive Kevin Byrne has been asked about recent incidents at some school districts in Putnam. Here is his response.

It should go without saying, but of course I condemn the recent reported actions of these young people, as I do all threats of violence and acts of racism or bigotry. The safety and security of our children is of the highest priority in Putnam County, which is why the Sheriff has been a part of this investigation from the beginning, and why our Department of Mental Health/Social Services has also worked to collaborate with our schools, including Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES’ regional crisis response team, throughout this ordeal.

I’ve been in contact with all county departments involved, and my office has also been in communication with the NAACP and has provided correspondence condemning the “Tik Tok” videos as well as any other racist or threatening comments or material shared.

A concern remains that children who threaten or commit acts of violence can sometimes be influenced by the responses later made by adults. It’s important these matters be investigated properly and addressed by the necessary agencies and entities, without distractions caused by any political grandstanding. That does not diminish the importance of the situation.

My office is also limited in providing comments regarding investigations by other departments, particularly when it pertains to minors, and will continue to comment accordingly.
