Op-Ed: Sullivan Grateful To Have Served Putnam County
A challenge to his election petitions knocked the chair of the Putnam County Legislature off the Republican line in the upcoming primary.

The writer is Putnam County Legislator Neal Sullivan.
Serving the families of Putnam County has been one of the great privileges of my life. Putnam has been my home for more than 50 years; it’s where my parents, siblings, and closest friends all grew up. My father founded a local insurance agency in Mahopac in the 1960s, and I proudly joined him in serving our community through the Lake Mahopac Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, Mahopac Chamber of Commerce, and most recently, for two terms, as Putnam County Legislator for the 9th District.
I am deeply proud of the accomplishments we have made over the past two terms — especially during the historic challenges of Covid-19 — but issues involving the arduous and highly subjective petition process will unfortunately prevent me from pursuing another term in office.

I will, however, continue to be an active member of our community to keep Putnam County moving in a positive direction — just as I will continue to encourage Putnam office holders to put aside the harsh tenor and divisiveness that has sadly taken hold of our local and national politics. I like to think we’re better than that.
I am grateful to my constituents for their strong support, and I thank my colleagues in the Legislature for their hard work and collegiality. I wish them all the best moving forward.
