As in previous years, the free gathering will begin with an open mic session at 7 p.m., followed by the headliner at 8. Everybody who wishes to share a poem, song, story, or book excerpt is invited, as well as those who just want to enjoy an evening of entertaining ditties and tales.

This season, Scribes will meet the second Saturday of each month, from September through May 2016, with two exceptions: the November meeting will be held on November 7 and there will be no December gathering.

Karen Smith Vastola’s love of words and flair for playwriting continues to bring her success. A graduate of Columbia University’s MFA Playwriting/Theatre program, Ms. Vastola has had her plays performed in many places, but most notably, on New York City stages. “Buried Words” was showcased at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2011.

This has been a productive year for Karen Vastola. Along with Big Apple presentations of her plays, “Oriflamme” and “14,” her play “Eggs & Apples” was given a reading at NewCity Stages in Philadelphia. Ms. Vastola debuted “First Kiss” at Studio Around the Corner almost two years ago. Since then, the play continues to win fans. In recent months, “First Kiss” was produced in Garrison and Ridgefield. She is busy adopting the play into a short story, to be featured in a forthcoming anthology, Night of the Living Pulps.

A writing teacher at Western Connecticut State University, Ms. Vastola promises a special Scribes night on September 12. She and her acting troupe will present readings of her plays “14” and “Under the Bed.”
