Police Negotiate End To Shotgun Standoff In Southeast

A resident called the Putnam County Sheriff's Office to report a suicidal family member.

SOUTHEAST, NY — A Southeast resident called police at 7:29 p.m. Wednesday to report an armed and suicidal family member pointing a shotgun at himself. Members of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, Carmel police and New York state troopers responded, Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley Jr said.

Police established a perimeter around the house on Guinea Road and with the help of the family member, were able to reach the 20-year-old, who refused to come out.

At 7:55 p.m. the Putnam Emergency Response Team — a special weapons and tactics unit comprised of sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Carmel and Kent police departments — was dispatched to the scene. Parts of Guinea Road were closed to traffic. Authorities evacuated several nearby residences.
