Here in Putnam County, there are so many beautiful natural places to explore. Numerous studies link walking in nature with improved mental and physical health, as well as stress relief. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Putnam County’s Master Gardener Volunteers will guide hikes on trails throughout the County beginning in August and running through November. Come learn more about natural heritage and discover the beauty of Putnam County.

These free, guided hikes will explore land-use, history, and invasive plants. The tour guides will point out highlights along the way—describing the vegetation, invasive species, and wildlife, as well as historical significance of the area—in addition to answering questions from the audience.

August 14: Hawk Rock at Whangtown Rd. at 10am: About a 4-mile loop over moderate terrain to Hawk Rock, a 30-foot-high rock with petroglyphs. The loop follows the Horsepound Brook which is pristine area owned by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
September 18: Wonder Lake State Park at 10am: This is a 3.5-mile hike with a 200-foot ascent. We will see regenerated farmland and the Cushman/Montgomery private estate. Features include an engineered lake, succession pastures with reforestation, and old carriage trails.
October 16: Fahnestock State Park at Dennytown Rd. at 10am: A moderate 3-mile hike. Features include a reforested mining area, Civilian Conservation Corps lakes and public works, and a vista. The hike has a 400-foot ascent.
November 6: Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area at 10am: A more challenging hike with waterfalls, and overlook, and a hemlock forest affected by the 2018 tornado. We’ll discuss the land use history from the 1600s to the present.
