PUTNAM COUNTY, NY β€” Much of Putnam's history β€” and a lot of its development issues β€” are tied to the reservoirs that supply water to New York City and some of Westchester County.

Next week, Amy Campanaro will present a lecture at the Kent Public Library called "The Reservoirs of Putnam and Their Impact." This program will explore the New York City watershed’s historic and current effect on the landscape and people of Putnam County.

NYC's three reservoir systems cover an area of almost 2,000 square miles, roughly the size of the state of Delaware. The Croton system has 12 reservoirs and three controlled lakes and normally supplies 10 percent of the city's drinking water, according to the NYC Department of Environmental Protection. The DEP map shows how much of Putnam the Croton watershed covers.
