Putnam Sheriff: Danbury Woman Stole From Donation Jar At Store

She had an outstanding warrant for non-appearance in Southeast town court on a drug charge, deputies found.

SOUTHEAST, NY — A call about a possible panhandler sent Putnam County Sheriff's Deputies into a search for a woman caught on surveillance video taking money from a donation jar at the check-out counter of a store in Patterson.

Deputies Kevin Osika and Brian Sacher responded to the area of Putnam Lake Market and Scotty’s Putnam Lake Wines & Liquors, for a request-for-service call at 12:45 p.m. Aug. 25 about a possible panhandler causing a disturbance, Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley, Jr.

When they got there, she had already left; however, the clerk at the liquor store was able to show the deputies video surveillance footage.

They canvassed the area and at 1:34 p.m. found a woman matching the description at a residence in Patterson.

A background check on Katherine Shanahan of Danbury turned up an outstanding bench warrant in Southeast for failure to appear on charges of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The 53-year-old was charged with petty larceny, a misdemeanor, for her theft of the money from the liquor store, said Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley, Jr.

Shanahan was booked and processed at the Putnam County Correctional Facility and then transported to the Town of Patterson Justice Court for arraignment on the petty larceny charge. She was released on her own recognizance to return to court Sept. 14. She was also arraigned on the bench warrant with a return date to the Town of Southeast Justice Court on Sept. 21.
