Pet Rabbit Abandoned; SPCA Enforcement Seeks Owner
The pet found in a cage by the side of the road had been neglected.

MAHOPAC, NY — A rabbit in a cage was found abandoned by the side of the road Monday. Carmel police were called by good samaritans about the pet rabbit, and police called the Putnam County SPCA at about 2 p.m.
The SPCA's Humane Law Enforcement Division went to the intersection of Red Mills Road and Hill Street in Mahopac where they found a white and black spotted male dwarf mix rabbit in a cage in a grassy area.

The rabbit had been neglected. Its fur was soaked with urine, it had very long nails on its paws and its cage was full of feces. The cage contained no water.

SPCA officers removed the rabbit and cage and took it to PetKraze at 100 Independent Way, Brewster where the animal will be cared for and will eventually be adopted, officials said.
The PCSPCA HLE Division is asking for the public’s assistance in finding the person or persons responsible for the abandonment of this rabbit. Animal neglect and abandonment are both misdemeanors under the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law and each carry up to a year in jail, a thousand dollar fine, or a combination of both.
