Sheet Metal Workers Recruiting 30 Apprentices

BREWSTER, NY — The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Sheet Metal Workers, Local Union No. 38, will conduct a recruitment from Jan. 2 through Dec. 27, 2019 for 30 sheet metal worker apprentices.
Applications can be obtained from the union offices at 38 Starr Ridge Road in Brewster from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding legal holidays) during the recruitment period.

The union requires that applicants:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED) as recognized by official school authorities.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license. Apprentices may be required to operate company vehicles.
- Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
- Must be willing and able to travel within the jurisdiction of Local Union No. 38, which includes: the counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester in New York; and the counties of Fairfield and Litchfield in Connecticut.
- Must submit to drug testing, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
- Must take a Math Test administered by Local Union Np. 38. The trade requires an extensive amount of math and work with rulers.
- Must provide Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Two other unions began recruitment efforts in November — for 20-25 sprinkler fitter apprentices and four carpenter lather apprentices — that are open for 12 months.
Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
