This shooting took place in the NYPD's 72nd Precinct, which patrols Sunset Park, Windsor Terrace and South Slope. According to official police statistics, through July 24, major crimes were collectively up in the 72nd about 16 percent compared to the same period last year, one of the largest increases in Brooklyn.

A review of crime data conducted by Patch showed that most of that increase appeared to have occurred in Sunset Park, as opposed to in Windsor Terrace and South Slope.

At a recent community meeting in Windsor Terrace, officers from the 72nd said that much of the precinct's crime increase was attributable to identity theft, often classified as grand larceny.

However, police statistics also show that through July 24, three more sexual assaults had taken place in the precinct then when compared to last year, along with 30 more felony assaults and eight more grand larcenies involving an automobile.

There were also four recorded shooting incidents in the precinct through July 24 with five victims, compared to one shooting with one victim during the same period in 2015.
