Identity Of Ambulette Driver Killed In Nassau Released: Police

A Hempstead man was killed when he was sideswiped by a car in Syosset on Wednesday morning.

SYOSSET, NY--UPDATED, 7:30 p.m.: Nassau Police identified the victim as 74-year-old Herman Hanson.

ORIGINAL STORY: An ambulette driver was killed Wednesday morning after he was hit by a car while on the shoulder of the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway.

The driver, 74, was transporting a patient to a local hospital for treatment and was being followed by the patient's family member, Det. Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick, of the Nassau police homicide squad, told Newsday at a press scrum.

The ambulette driver and family member stopped on the shoulder of southbound Route 135, south of Jericho Turnpike, to discuss the route they would take. The driver of the ambulette left the vehicle. Someone driving a third car, an Infiniti G37 according to Newsday, sideswiped both cars and struck the man, who was declared dead at the scene. Police did not identify the victim. The third car's driver remained at the scene.

"This Infiniti then traveled an approximate 100 yards down the road where it eventually stopped," Fitzpatrick said.

Police are investigating the causes of the accident and have ruled out alcohol. They're still looking into factors such as whether the driver was speeding and/or on the phone.
