'Barbra' Invades Syosset Library Theater

A tribute concert brought the diva's music to town Sunday.

The Syosset Public Library presented A Tribute to Barbra Streisand on Sunday. The JC Revue starring vocalist JC paid tribute to her musical idol, Barbra Streisand, by singing a variety of Streisand's hits, which included "The Way We Were," "Don't Rain," "Memories" and more.

Swaying her hips back and forth across the stage, JC commanded the microphone.

"I put 150 percent into every show. I am very theatrical, that's why I love performing these songs so much. I am humbled to do a tribute to my musical idol," she said.

JC, also known as Jill Wasserman, has been performing professionally for the past 15 years. A huge Streisand fan since she was a young girl, JC was awestruck when she first saw Streisand on the television screen. "The first time I saw her in Funny Girl -- that was it for me. I was completely mesmerized by her performance. Barbra is the best," she said.

While many listeners often tell JC she sounds exactly like Streisand, she disagrees. "I don't think I sound just like Barbra. When I do a show, I don't imitate her. I interpret her music. It's all JC when I perform," said JC.

Even though JC admits to loving every single Streisand song, there are a few that hold a special place in her heart. "'Somewhere over the Rainbow,' 'Don't Rain' and 'Papa Can You Hear Me.' I can never get through the song 'Papa' without crying," she said.

With her husband Steve Wasserman by her side as the audio technician, JC wouldn't have it any other way.

In addition to performing Streisand songs on stages throughout New York and Florida, JC also performs in another show titled Popular Divas of Our Time.

"It's a collaboration of songs by Whitney Houston and Bette Midler that I sing," she said. "I can sing anything from Broadway to pop. The only thing I won't do is rap, that's where I draw the line."

JC has a new CD out now titled Songs for a Lifetime. For more information, visit www.jcrevue.com.
