Long Island Plane Crash Leaves 3 Dead
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon, police say.

UPDATED at 11 p.m.:
Authorities confirmed three people on board a small engine plane were killed after the plane went down in Syosset on Tuesday afternoon.
Police say the plane suffered an unknown problem and crashed in the vicinity of Southwoods Road and Cold Spring Road at 3:45 p.m., creating a large debris field.
The plane's flight began in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and intended to land in Plainfield, Connecticut, police say. The identities of the victims, two men and a woman, are not being released at this time.
Firefighters searched the area on foot and used the department's tower ladder apparatus and thermal imaging camera to assist in the search efforts, according to the Syosset Volunteer Fire Department. Syosset firefighters also searched and secured multiple impacted houses in the area.
"Our members responded quickly and very professionally to this challenging incident," SFD first assistant chief Douglas Share said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the victims and their families."
There are no injuries reported on the ground at this time.
The investigation has been turned over to the Nassau County Police Department and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Syosset Superintendent of Schools released a statement regarding the incident:
At approximately 3:40 p.m., an unusual noise was heard in the vicinity of South Woods M.S., Syosset High School and Berry Hill Elementary School. We have been advised by the police to keep remaining personnel and students indoors in these buildings until further notice. Please avoid coming to our campuses until we have communicated with you further.
UPDATE: The Syosset Central School District has been advised by police to continue to hold all students and personnel indoors. We will ensure that transportation will remain available for all students. They will be released either to buses or parents only after being directed to do so by the police.
