Seeing is believing, or is it? Using a fascinating collection of optical illusions, magic tricks, puzzles and surprising phenomena, students will be challenged to interact with a variety of media to delve into the magical arts, science and related technologies. This hands-on, minds-on course will provide participants with a better understanding of the underlying science behind magic. Emphasis will be on the MAGIC that we use, with performance and presentation skills. Students will need to practice at home in order to master the tricks in time for the final workshop presentation to parents. Participants get to keep all of the magical materials that are handed out in class.

MISSION TO MARS: A VIRTUAL REALITY JOURNEY TO MARS!

Team experience with emphasis on collaboration and problem solving. (Grades 6-8)

PHASE 1-Are you ready to go to MARS? Pack your bags, grab your Mission Control Passports and journey into SPACE as part of a NASA Mission Control Team Simulation. Participants will take on the roles of scientists and engineers as they send a spacecraft to map the surface of Mars in preparation for a manned landing. NASA has established an optimal time table for the early 2030’s when the orbits of the two planets will be closest to each other.

PHASE 2-Our virtual journey continues with the search for the perfect landing area on Mars for the first human colony. Hands-on experiments with gyroscopes, homemade spectrographic analyzers and other gadgets and toys will be supplemented with discussions on Kepler’s Laws, the Drake Equation, the SETI Program and an exploration of real time space hazards that the team will have to overcome in order to ensure the success of their group mission.

Special Summer Program with placement test requirements, each Phase is a 2 week program with 1 ½ hour classes, max.15 students/class

Instructor: Peter Suchmann, aka “Presto Pete” was a former Science department chair from the Great Neck School District, who created science programs for the LIU Center for Gifted Youth Summer Camp and is a Public Access TV science program producer.
