Movie Prompts Discussion at North Shore Synagogue

On deck is a similar program on Jewish-Islamic dialogue.

The North Shore Synagogue in Syosset on Wednesday presented a free screening of Cast a Giant Shadow, the true story of American Col. Micky Marcus and the help he gave to the Israeli military in organizing their forces around the time Israel's independence was declared and recognized. The 1966 classic stars Kirk Douglas as Marcus.

According to Diana Silverman, co-chair of the Lifelong Learning Program at North Shore Synagogue, the inspiration behind premiering Cast a Giant Shadow was based on celebrating Israeli's Independence Day, which took place on April 25.

"It has been 62 years since Israel became a nation," said Silverman, who added, "I am passionate about Israel because my father's family came to Israel in the 1800s."

Israel declared statehood on May 14, 1948, a day before the end of Britain's United Nations mandate over Palestine.

Enlightening the audience was crucial for Silverman.

"They should never forget. Israel is a small land that has experienced constant fighting," says Silverman.

Co-chair Paul Joseph agreed, saying, "Remembrance of the establishment of Israel is important to the world."

One of those in attendance, Linda Robin of Oyster Bay, was beyond impressed with Cast a Giant Shadow. "I thought the film was great. To learn the history of Israel was fascinating," she said.

The next presentation at the synagogue is a four-part series on Islam. It will be held on consecutive Mondays, May 3, 10, 17 and 24, at 7:30 p.m. Individuals from the synagogue and community are welcome to attend the free event and learn about Islam from Naomi Greenspan, a speaker involved in fostering Jewish-Islamic dialogue.
