• Long Island Orienteering Club members explore the woods with just a map and a compass (newsday.com) — A Syosset resident is among locals embracing orienteering with the Long Island Orienteering Club, which runs map-and-compass "scavenger hunt" hikes in area parks. With fall meets set for Sept. 20, Oct. 17, and Nov. 15, newcomers can learn basic navigation, join as individuals or teams, and explore nearby preserves without relying on GPS.
